Château La Valière
The Tour de By takes its name from a small tower built in 1825.
The tower served as a lighthouse to guide ships navigating the mouth of the Gironde at the time. The vineyard has been in continuous ownership since 1599 and now covers more than 100 hectares of mainly gravelly soils.
The principal grape varieties are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, used in roughly equal proportions.
Tour de By practices sustainable agriculture and holds the title of Cru Bourgeois Supérieur.
Known in the Médoc as Château des Chalets since 1874, it became a Cru Bourgeois in 1932; in 1970 it became Château La Vallière. It grows 15 hectares of vines on a mountain-top vineyard overlooking the Gironde River. No chemical fertilizers are used, only natural compost.
